How to Find the Blacksmith in Enshrouded
Rescue Oswald Anders from the Blacksmith Ancient Vault and unlock early melee gear, tools, metalworking, and survivor progression.

The Blacksmith, Oswald Anders, is the first craftsperson you rescue. Follow Find The Sleeping Survivor to the Ancient Vault - Blacksmith, not far from the Cinder Vault starting area, awaken him, then summon him inside your Flame Altar area.
Why rescue the Blacksmith first?
Oswald opens the central metalworking progression:
- Melee armor, weapons, and shields
- Improved pickaxes, axes, and rakes
- Charcoal Kiln
- Forge
- Smelter
- Smithing Tools
- Blast Furnace
His quests also lead toward other survivors and later metal tiers.
Rescue checklist
- Accept Find The Sleeping Survivor during the opening progression.
- Follow its map marker to Ancient Vault - Blacksmith.
- Clear the vault approach and interact with Oswald's Cinder Vessel.
- Return to a base inside an active Flame Altar area.
- Craft a Summoning Staff and place Oswald.
- Give him a sheltered room when his quest requests it.
Best early follow-up
Build the Charcoal Kiln and Forge chain, then complete Blacksmith quests as new regions open. The Crucible recovered through Crucible Needed For A Smelter unlocks the Smelter needed for Copper Bars.
