Best Enshrouded Skills to Unlock First

Choose the best early Enshrouded skills after the Forging the Path rework, including movement, survival, weapon specialization, and build priorities.

Last updated: 2026-08-25

The best first skills in Enshrouded are the ones that improve every expedition while keeping a clear route toward one primary weapon. After the Forging the Path rework, the tree has more connections, upgradeable skills, central access to Double Jump, and specialization nodes for weapon families.

Best early priorities at a glance

PrioritySkill directionWhy it matters
1Main attribute and primary weapon routeProduces dependable damage with the weapon actually used
2Health and stamina supportPrevents a damage build from collapsing during ordinary exploration
3Double JumpBroad traversal value for every class
4Weapon specialization and Focus abilityDefines the main combat loop after the Update 8 rework
5One recovery or resource solutionKeeps melee stamina, ranger stamina, or mage mana sustainable

Double Jump

Double Jump is one of the strongest general exploration investments because it helps with ruins, uneven voxel terrain, ledges, and combat repositioning. Forging the Path moved it toward the center of the tree so every class can reach it more easily.

Unlock it early if exploration and building are a major part of the playthrough. A boss-focused character can delay it briefly, but should not spend a large detour on minor bonuses while leaving this universal movement tool unavailable.

Choose one weapon specialization first

Do not buy every nearby damage node merely because it is accessible. Choose the weapon that handles most encounters:

  • One-handed melee: prioritize its specialization, blocking or parrying support, health, and stamina.
  • Two-handed melee: prioritize its specialization, heavy-attack or stun support, Strength, and enough health for longer recovery windows.
  • Bow: prioritize bow specialization, Dexterity, ranged or weak-point support, and stamina.
  • Daggers: prioritize dagger specialization, Dexterity, mobility, and close-range survivability.
  • Wand: prioritize applicable magic damage, Intelligence, wand support, and mana recovery.
  • Staff: prioritize spell damage, Intelligence, Spirit, charge-time or mana support, and the elements used most often.

The Build Planner produces a concise priority list for each archetype.

Focus abilities and skill upgrades

Regular weapon attacks can build Focus after the corresponding specialization route is unlocked. Focus then powers the weapon's special ability. Buy the specialization for the weapon you use consistently before investing in a second weapon family.

Many skills can also be upgraded after their base unlock. A fully upgraded core skill generally provides more value than several disconnected base nodes that do not serve the same combat loop. Armor perks can push learned skills beyond the levels purchased with points, so check equipment before spending the final upgrade.

Strategic Maneuver

Strategic Maneuver changes a locked-on melee dodge so it can move behind an enemy. It is valuable for dagger and positional melee play, but it also changes movement behavior. Treat it as a preference rather than an automatic first purchase, especially if straight-line dodges are already part of your muscle memory.

Updraft and gliding skills

Updraft is valuable for exploration-focused characters, but Forging the Path changed it so lift charges during the first seconds of gliding. It provides greater maximum height than before when fully charged, while base areas charge it faster. Pair gliding skills with the Glider progression guide; skills cannot compensate for keeping the starting Glider forever.

Common early skill mistakes

  1. Splitting damage points evenly across Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence.
  2. Unlocking multiple weapon specializations before finishing one reliable combat route.
  3. Buying damage without enough stamina, mana, health, or recovery to use it.
  4. Copying a pre-April 2026 skill-tree image after the complete tree rework.
  5. Purchasing a skill because an armor perk mentions it without first learning its base version.
  6. Treating a respec as free when it consumes Runes needed for equipment upgrades.

Suggested order by playstyle

Solo explorer

Primary weapon route → health or stamina → Double Jump → weapon specialization → resource recovery → secondary utility.

Co-op damage dealer

Primary attribute → weapon specialization → Focus ability support → critical or damage-type nodes → one survival layer.

Co-op healer

Intelligence and Spirit route → sustainable healing and mana → defensive utility → personal wand support → movement.
