Enshrouded Water Guide: Wells, Dispensers and Base Building
Find and store water in Enshrouded, build Water Wells and Dispensers, fill pouches, create pools, and recover from flooding.

Water became a simulated part of Embervale with the Wake of Water update on November 10, 2025. You can collect it from natural water, wells, rain barrels, and dispensers, then use it for farming, cooking, crafting, and decorative base projects.
Where to get water
Early characters can collect Water from wells or natural pools. Later bases can produce it with a Water Well or Water Dispenser.
| Source | Best use | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Natural lakes and pools | Exploration and bulk collection | Fixed location |
| Existing settlement wells | Early-game collection | Convenient near restored towns |
| Water Well | Passive base supply | Generates up to 12 Water over time |
| Water Dispenser | Controlled water simulation | Continues until stopped, removed, or submerged |
| Rain Barrel | Capturing rainfall | Depends on exposure and weather |
A Water Pouch holds up to 20 Water and costs 1 Animal Fur to craft. Equip it and interact with a suitable water source or well to fill it.
How to unlock and build a Water Well
Complete the Carpenter's Finding Masonry Tools quest and recover the Masonry Tools. A Water Well requires:
- 20 Linen;
- 100 Stone;
- 1 Wooden Bucket.
The well stores up to 12 Water. You can collect five units at a time, after which the supply regenerates. Place it close to farming and cooking stations so the base has a reliable everyday source.
How to build a Water Dispenser
Craft a Water Dispenser at a Workbench with:
- 1 Metal Scraps;
- 3 Tin Bars.
The dispenser creates simulated water continuously until it is turned off, removed, or covered by the water it produced. Use barriers to define the pool and drains to control the final level. Mud absorbs water, while water entering the Shroud dissipates, so test the ground and edges before filling a large structure.
Safe pool and moat setup
- Back up the world before a large water project.
- Build a sealed basin inside the Flame Altar boundary.
- Add a drain or safe overflow route before adding the dispenser.
- Start with one dispenser and watch the water level.
- Turn it off before the surface reaches doors, crafting areas, or storage.
- Test swimming exits so players and animals cannot become trapped.
For a farm, a well is simpler than an open simulated reservoir. Use a Watering Can or Portable Water Pump when a task calls for moving water rather than creating a permanent lake.
Water in crafting and farming
Crafting stations can use water stored in their inventories, and nearby wells can support recipes where the system permits. Keep water near the Farmer's stations, food production, and irrigated plots. Separate decorative water from the main storage aisle so changes to a pool cannot interrupt the working base.
If waterfront access is your priority, compare the recommendations in best base locations, then plan altar coverage and production flow with the base planning guide.
How to remove accidental flooding
First turn off or remove every dispenser feeding the area. Then interact with the Flame Altar and use its emergency option to remove simulated water inside the base. If water returns, look for another active source or an inflow from outside the protected boundary.
Do not dismantle random terrain while water is still flowing: opening a lower path can spread the problem through more rooms. A recent backup remains the safest recovery option for a large or complex base.
Frequently asked questions
Is water infinite in Enshrouded?
Natural bodies persist, wells refill over time, and a Water Dispenser continues producing water until stopped or submerged. A pouch itself only carries 20 units.
Why did my Water Dispenser stop?
It stops when switched off, removed, or submerged by its own output. Check whether the water level has reached the device.
Can water destroy a base?
Poorly controlled simulated water can flood rooms and routes. Build an overflow or drain, test in stages, and use the Flame Altar's emergency water-removal option if needed.
