Runes and Gear Upgrading
How Runes are obtained and used to enhance weapons and, since the Forging the Path update, armor, shields, wards, rings, and tools.

Runes are the shared currency behind gear enhancement and skill point respec in Enshrouded.
Getting Runes
Runes drop from Fell enemies (bosses and Fell-tagged mobs across every region), from chests, and from dismantling weapons you no longer need. Boss fights are the most reliable source once you are clearing a region's Fell variants regularly.
What Runes are used for
- Enhancing weapons through the relevant Craftsperson's workstation.
- Respeccing your skill tree at the Flame Altar, at a cost of 1 Rune per spent skill point.
- Since the April 2026 Forging the Path update, armor, shields, wards, rings, pickaxes, and felling axes also became upgradeable with Runes through their relevant specialist Survivor, extending the system well past weapons.
Practical tips
- Don't dismantle spare weapons the moment you outgrow them; hold a few back as a quick Rune source if you're short before an upgrade.
- Check which Survivor handles a given gear category before farming Runes for a specific upgrade; the specialist matters as much as the material cost.
- Track upgrade costs against your current Rune reserve before committing to a full respec, since both systems draw from the same pool.
