Flame Altar and Strengthening the Flame

How the Flame Altar claims a base, how altar size upgrades work, and what Strengthening the Flame gives you at each level.

Last updated: 2026-08-08

The Flame Altar is the workshop that claims a base. Anything built, placed, or terraformed inside its boundary is permanent; changes made outside it reset after 30 minutes or a server restart. It is crafted from 5 of any stone via Manual Crafting once you accept the Claim a Spot for Your Base quest.

What the Flame Altar does

  • Claims a permanent building area and allows terrain reshaping inside it.
  • Lets you spend materials on Strengthening the Flame, Embervale's global upgrade track.
  • Lets you reset your skill tree for 1 Rune per spent skill point.
  • Acts as a fast travel point and a heat source for Rested buffs.
  • Up to 10 Flame Altars can exist in the world at once.

Altar size upgrades

Altar levelMax areaMaterialsRequired Flame level
140×40×40None1
280×80×801 Shroud Core1
3120×120×1205 Shroud Core2
4160×160×1605 Shroud Nexus3

Strengthening the Flame

Strengthening the Flame is a separate, global upgrade track shared by every altar you own. Each level:

  • Increases every primary attribute by 1 (from Flame level 2 onward).
  • Adds 1 minute of maximum Shroud time.
  • Raises your Shroud Passage Level, opening previously deadly Shroud.

Each level requires a boss head from the corresponding boss guide plus a bundle of regional materials, so plan a farming pass through the matching region before attempting to upgrade. The Flame level itself never decreases, even if every altar is extinguished.

Removing an altar

Deactivating a Flame Altar starts a 30-second cancellable timer. Once it disappears, anything built inside its old boundary stays in place until the area resets (30 minutes, or a server restart) unless you place a new altar first. A replacement altar does not inherit its predecessor's size upgrades.
