Frost and Hypothermia Explained

How the frost timer works at altitude in the Albaneve Summits and what reduces or resets it.

Last updated: 2026-08-08

The Albaneve Summits introduce a frost mechanic on top of the normal Shroud timer. It only applies at altitude, not throughout the whole region.

How the frost timer works

  • Climbing above a certain height starts a frost timer shown with a shield icon in the top-left corner.
  • The number next to the shield icon is your current frost protection.
  • If the timer reaches zero, hypothermia kills you.
  • The timer counts down faster the longer you stay at height without protection.

What restores or resets it

  • Moving down to a lower altitude lets the timer recover.
  • Standing near a large pool of lava restores frost protection.
  • Fireplaces and most world-generated campfires provide frost resistance (some are decorative only and provide none, so check before relying on one).
  • Dying and respawning inside the frost biome only resets the timer to about 75%, not fully.

Gearing up before you climb

  • A Pocket Heater is the most portable frost protection source.
  • Frost-resistant food buffs extend your safe window before you need to descend.
  • Late-game armor sets add passive frost protection, letting you spend more time at Howling Peak's altitude.

See the Albaneve Summits region guide for the settlements and landmarks worth reaching before you push to the summit.
